Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya meets NE health ministers to take stock of Covid situation

Landing in the region with a central team for the meet, Mandaviya announced a special package of Rs 1,352.92 crores for the Northeastern states to strengthen their health infrastructure to fight the pandemic effectively.

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a meeting with health ministers of Northeastern states to review the COVID-19 situation in the region, in Guwahati, Assam, on Tuesday. This was the Union Minister’s first visit to Assam.

Landing in the region with a central team for the meet, Mandaviya announced a special package of Rs 1,352.92 crores for the Northeastern states to strengthen their health infrastructure to fight the pandemic effectively.

“Utilising this fund, the states can enhance the health facilities to combat the pandemic more aggressively,” said the minister, adding that the Centre has been constantly monitoring the Covid situation in this region and will ensure a regular supply of vaccines so that a larger number of people in the states can get vaccinated within the next few months.

The Minister appreciated the state governments of the region for their efforts in controlling the spread of the pandemic during the second wave. When asked about the possible threat of the third wave in the Northeast, the Minister said he is hopeful that the state governments are fully prepared to thwart it.

In the meeting, the Health Minister of Assam, Keshav Mahanta, and ministers from other Northeastern states gave an overview of the Covid situation to Mandaviya and apprised him of their strategies to combat the pandemic in their respective states through brief presentations.

Health Ministers of Sikkim, Mizoram, and Nagaland were present in today’s deliberation, while the Education and Law Minister of Tripura and Adviser of Chief Minister of Manipur represented their respective states in the review meeting. Senior officials of the State Government and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare too attended the meeting.
