The United Hynniewtrep Movement (UHM) held a peaceful demonstration on Thursday demanding the Meghalaya Government to give free land registration to people living in the border areas to prevent encroachment by the State of Assam.

Speaking to reporters, president of the organisation, Charlie J Rani said, “If the State Government gives free land registration to people living in the border areas it will be very easy to solve the border issue because we are looking for the free will of the people.”

Rani appealed the government to give free land registration to the people living on the border areas as the people claimed that thay want to be with the Meghalaya Government and do not want to register with the Assam Government.

Another member, Banshai Marbaniang, said that the government should also implement border schemes.

Rani said that the organisation will intensify its agitation if the State Government does not pay heed to its demands.

“We will hold a public meeting in every district headquarter,” he added.
