SHILLONG:

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed shock and profound grief at the sudden demise of S.K. Sunn, MLA from Mawphlang Constituency who joined the party as an associate member on May 29, 2018.

Sunn passed away at his residence in Mawngap at around 5 pm on Friday. He was 62.

In a statement issued by UDP after his passing, the general secretary of the party, Jemino Mawthoh said that Sunn was known for his meticulous handling of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department affairs when he was the chief engineer.

“People will always remember him for the way he guided the implementation of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) and gave the Mawphlang Dam a facelift. As an MLA, we have witnessed how articulately he used to raise important issues concerning the state. He will be greatly missed. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” Mawthoh wrote.

Sunn, an engineer by profession, had contested elections for the first time as an independent candidate from Mawphlang constituency in 2018 and won. He later joined the UDP as an associate member. He was also the Chairman of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Committee on Environment.

The first-time politician was also an avid football fan. He was the owner of Rangdajied FC (earlier known as Ar Hima Sports Club) and Nangkiew Irat SC.
