This village in South West Khasi Hills has been without a school for 13 years

Members of the Khasi Student’s Union, South West Khasi Hills District, recently met the Director of Schools, Education and Literacy, Ambrose Ch Marak and demanded the immediate renovation of the Government Lower Primary School in Domiasiat village.

According to Forwardman Nongrem, President of KSU SWKHD, the union urged the Director to reappoint the assistant teachers who were transferred back in 2007.

We may note that Domiasiat village is known for its uranium deposits and has been without a school for 13 years.

The children of this village have to walk about 10 kilometres to attend classes in neighbouring villages.

The school was closed in 2007 after several protests against uranium mining in the state by various pressure groups.

The two school teachers were transferred to Phlangdiloin Government LP School and Sasniang Government LP School.

Nongrem said that Marak assured the union that the Government LP School in Domiasiat village would be re-opened in 2021.
