SHILLONG:

After securing a decisive victory in the Mawryngkneng bye-poll, National People's Party (NPP) legislator from Mawryngkneng, Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that one of his immediate priorities will be to strengthen the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

“The Central government is proposing to bring constitutional amendment in the Sixth Schedule. Therefore, we will work together with the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government and give them more support and strength,” said Syiem.

Spelling out his other priorities, the newly elected MLA also said that he is keen to work with the traditional institutions for the implementation of the various developmental activities in the Mawryngkneng constituency, which include safe drinking water supply, road connectivity and health care.

He also assured to take up issues related to the interest of the farmers in the constituency and the state as a whole.

Syiem, who is the current chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), told the press that winning the bye-election is not the party’s victory, but of the people.

When asked if one year would be enough to fulfill the people’s aspirations, Syiem said, “It is not about time, it is about how you work. So, we will try our level best to deliver maximum service to the people in this time.” Syiem also thanked the people for their trust and assured them that as an MLA he will work for the welfare of the people across all fronts.
