State government not shielding those involved in illegal practices: Meghalaya Deputy CM

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, on Monday, said that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is not involved in any illegal activities, and asserted that they are not shielding or protecting those involved in illegal practices.

“Some people jump into conclusion that the state government is involved in this, which is wrong,” Tynsong told reporters in response to questions raised by the Opposition over the government’s failure to take action against illegal coal mining in the state.

The NPP-led MDA government has been criticised from several corners because of its alleged involvement in illegal mining and coal transportation.

The BJP, an ally of the MDA Government, and the Opposition Congress have demanded an independent probe concerning the matter.

However, the state government termed the allegations as baseless and maintained there is no illegal coal mining in the state.

The Deputy Chief Minister also stated that the state government would not spare those who indulge in illegal mining and coal transportation.

“We have instructed the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to be more vigilant and act against any illegality. Illegalities happen everywhere, and if detected, the law will take its course,” Tynsong said.

Tynsong also refused to comment on the BJP’s demand for Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to step down following the death of six miners in East Jaiñtia Hills.

“I am not aware who are these people who were indulging in illegal coal mining activities,” Tynsong added.
