SHILLONG:

Stating that the situation in Shillong is limping back to normalcy, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday informed that from tomorrow, the curfew will be relaxed from 6 am to 4 pm in most parts of Shillong city.

“The situation in Shillong is slightly calmer,” Sangma said.

The decision was taken in a meeting, which Sangma held with the Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, and Chief Secretary in the morning.

“The micro-level details and the locality-wise decisions are to be taken by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and, soon, he will be coming out with the detailed timings of relaxation of the curfew. In all likelihood, it will be from 6 am till 4 pm,” he said, adding that the ban on mobile internet service will also be lifted from 6 pm on Wednesday.

Sangma further added that the government is engaging with all the stakeholders to bring back normalcy in the city.

“We have started engaging in discussions with all the stakeholders, including the rangbah shnong(s), religious leaders, senior citizens, and organisations. We have appealed to the people to maintain peace and, the response we have received has been very positive,” he said, adding that so far, no arrests have been made in connection with the stray incidents of violence that took place in Mawlai and Jaiaw on August 15.

He also informed that the Peace Committee, which was formed on August 16 under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, will be meeting on Wednesday.

When asked about the State Security Commission meeting, Sangma said, “Let the situation cool down then we will call the meeting.”
