NONGPOH:

The Dorbar Shnong of Saiden, on January 5, denied the Meghalaya government report which cited two Omicrton infections in the village.

The alleged patients, along with the Seng Samla Shnong, refuted the claims of the Health Department which released the list of patients from different areas of Meghalaya declaring them to be infected with the new variant of Covid-19 on January 4.

The two alleged patients also stated that the health department's report mentioned that they are the returnees from the United States of America, which according to them is not true, as they are farmers and hardly go out of the district headquarters, Nongpoh.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, on January 5, also ruled out the possibility of lockdown in the state following the detection of five Omicron cases.

Taking into consideration the economic hardships faced by people during the previous lockdowns, he said that such a step would not be favourable for the general public for the moment; given the steady opening up of economic activities in the state.

He also cited examples of other states which have also refrained from imposing lockdown or strict containment measures looking into the plight of the poor and the economically weaker sections.
