NONGPOH:

A citizen of Ri Bhoi District, Meghalaya on Wednesday filed a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner on the alleged illegal collection of fees from the local carrier vehicles by personnel manning the Weight Bridge at Umling.

The complainant, MG Kharshanlor, a resident of Nongpoh, said that he is also a victim of such "illegal acts committed by the authorities concerned."

Kharshanlor said that recently, his private bolero camper carrying 11 (number) of Plywood, while on the way from Byrnihat to Nongpoh, was illegally stopped at Umling Weighbridge.

He alleged that the police personnel manning the weighbridge asked the driver the get the vehicle measured; "However, without weighing or measurement of the said vehicle, the concerned person at the weighbridge asked the driver to pay Rs 100 and that too without any receipt," he said.

“The amount of money paid may seem insignificant and small but, I had filed the complaint for the sake of those voiceless people who have suffered and undergone similar ordeal," Kharshanlor said.

"This illegal action of the persons manning the weighbridge tantamounts to broad daylight robbery perpetrated by them."

Kharshanlor has sought the intervention of the Deputy Commissioner in this regard, stating that such illegal acts should not be allowed to continue and immediate action is required to curb these activities.
