Previous govt failed to address ILP issue in Meghalaya: Chief Minister

Sangma also refused to agree that the NGOs are accusing the state government for the delay in implementation of the ILP. “Whenever I speak to them (NGOs), they tell me that they appreciate the fact that this government has at least taken the step to pass the resolution,” he said.

SHILLONG:

Holding the past governments responsible for not resolving the Inner Line Permit (ILP) issue in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said that his government will continue to pursue the ILP implementation with the union government.

“The past governments had said that they don’t need the ILP. In fact, the past government had never taken any step to move a resolution on it, but this government has done it,” Sangma said, accusing the previous government of not paying heed to ILP demand.

It must be recalled that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly had passed the ILP resolution in December 2019 after the centre has passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The CM further maintained that the implementation of the ILP is a subject matter of the union government as “it is a process” and that the state government can only work towards it and it is doing just that.

Meanwhile, Sangma refused to agree that the NGOs are accusing the state government for the delay in implementation of the ILP. “Whenever I speak to them (NGOs), they tell me that they appreciate the fact that this government has at least taken the step to pass the resolution,” he said.
