SHILLONG:

Responding to a question raised by Ampati Congress legislator Miani D. Shira, Public Engineering Health (PHE) Minister Renikton L. Tongkhar on Thursday informed the Assembly that 70 per cent of the physical work of the Greater Ampati Water Supply Scheme (GAWSS) had been completed but the pace of the project was “unexpectedly slow.”

Tongkhar however rejected Shira's claims that the work had been discontinued.

The GAWSS project was sanctioned in 2012–2013. But a contract for the same was however only awarded in 2017 and the total amount released so far has been Rs. 87 crore.

The minister added that there had been a proposal to further revise this amount in 2018–2019, but the matter is still under consideration.

In response to a supplementary query on the delay in project completion, Tongkhar said that among the complex reasons for the delay, one major issue has been site problems that resulted in the change of the water source.
