SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday said that there is no question of laying off MeECL employees due to the contracting of power distribution to franchisees.

Sangma said that the state government will look into a complete revamp of the overall staff to improve the efficiency and increase the number of manpower where ever it lacks, which in no way includes removing anyone from their jobs.

With the Distribution Franchisees in place, especially with the REC partnership, the CM said that there will be a large amount of professionalism that will come in and to a large extent, there will be competition to improve the franchisees in the long run.

The franchisees will also have to guarantee a certain revenue to the state, which will be a much higher revenue for the state as compared to what it is currently getting from the power department.
