SHILLONG:

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Friday asked the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government not to introduce railways in Khasi Hills region in view of the absence of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and other anti-influx mechanisms.

HYC president Robert June Kharjahrin said that the council and the people of the state will continue to strongly oppose any move to introduce railways - be it goods or passenger trains - as long as the state doesn’t implement a mechanism to address the influx issue.

“In view of this, we ask the state government to stop discussing railways prior to the implementation of the ILP in the state,” Kharjahrin said.

He also alleged that Assam, Tripura and even some parts of Shillong and the plain belts of Garo Hills have already become victims of influx.

Kharjahrin’s statement came in the wake of the recent statement by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma that the government is keen to engage with stakeholders for the introduction of goods trains in the state.
