SHILLONG:

NEIGRIHMS Director Dr P Bhattacharya has said that people are not listening to the suggestions of wearing masks and following COVID appropriate behaviour.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he said, “Bottomline is that people are not listening, we need to have a schoolteacher with a stick. Even if you don’t wear a mask, even six feet will not help. We will have to follow all three components. Only then COVID will come down.”

He said that the hospital has reduced unnecessary surgeries.

Bhattarcharya said that the hospital has manpower only to run regular ICUs and has merged two ICUs.

The number of patients coming to the hospital has also dropped from 3000 patients (approx) to about 340 patients, he informed.

Asked if staff are quarantined, he said, “Quarantine business is over. It is not logical. COVID is a way of life now, last time people took precautions and people were more afraid last time, then it is realised that people have to take precautions and it is through lack of precautions that we get COVID.”

“We are providing requisite protection, equipment for staff and at the end of the pandemic, we will look to see whether we can reward them. Will care for them and protect the staff, my commitment to every staff,” he added.
