Meghalaya: Solving border issue with Assam a golden jubilee gift for state: Mawkyrwat MLA

Cabinet Minister and MLA of Mawkyrwat, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, has said that solving the vexed border dispute issue between Meghalaya and Assam will be a golden jubilee gift to the state

The MLA was referring to the 50 years of statehood that Meghalaya will be celebrating next year.

Speaking to reporters in the city on Thursday, he said, “I urge the people to cooperate with the state government to resolve the border issue. With the Almighty’s wisdom and help, the two states can hopefully solve the issue before we celebrate 50 years of statehood. It will be a joyous occasion if we can get the golden jubilee gift.”

“If we are really interested in finding a solution, we request all the stakeholders to give positive suggestions on how to move forward and find solution to the border dispute,” he added.

He also pinned hope on both states demarking a permanent boundary, that can be amicably accepted by both.

Tongkhar also informed that the Governor of Meghalaya has constituted district committee in the different areas of the state to inspect the villages in the areas of differences.

As a member selected to chair the District Committee for West Khasi Hills, he informed that the committee will inspect the villages and then submit to report to the list of villages including the population in accordance with the terms and references of the committee.

“The committee is supposed to submit the report within one month from the date of issue (July 29). This committee is expected to go to the grassroots and meet the people to understand the mind of the people residing in those areas,” he said.

Tongkhar said that he is looking forward for cooperation from local residents, traditional heads, and political leaders of the respective villages for the first meeting of the committee that will be held in the next 3-4 days.

As per the notification issued on July 29, 2021, the District Committee for West Khasi Hills will inspect the areas of difference namely Tarabari, Gizang, and Hahim.
