BAGHMARA:

Sengnal Sangma, former executive member of the National People’s Party (NPP) resigned along with more than a thousand of his supporters.

Sangma is the only sitting MDC from the NPP who has been denied a ticket to contest from the party.

In a mass resignation, Sangma and his supporters wrote to the NPP working president on March 6, announcing their intent, calling the move to deny the former finance in-charge of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) a ticket from the party as ‘gross injustice’.

The party members who resigned included the working president, vice president, general secretary, joint secretaries among others.

In a letter to the party, the members stated, “The reason for the resignation is that of the denial of party ticket to Sengnal Sangma. We consider this as a humiliation meted out to the former executive member (EM).”

“Being the only NPP MDC from South Garo Hills (SGH), he has been working tirelessly for the people of his constituency and the members of the party. He has never damaged the image of the party and has been very loyal to it, since his election to the GHADC,” said the party members.

According to sources, Sengnal will stand as an independent candidate from Wagesik.
