Meghalaya: Tura doctor turns Messiah for ailing woman

TURA | AUG 04, 2020:

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors are still frantically trying to find ways and means to extend their services, be it online or offline.

In a similar instance, a doctor from Garo Hills went beyond his call of duty to help a patient, when all hope seems to disappear.

The doctor, who did not wish to be named, turned Messiah for a woman undergoing treatment at the Tura Maternity and Child Hospital (TMCH) since the past week.

The patient, identified as Merilla Ch Sangma from Jamge in East Garo Hills, had undergone a surgery on August 3 at TMCH, where doctors successfully removed a 24-kg tumour.

The tumour was so large that it had to be carried in a bucket for analysis to a lab in the Tura Bazaar area.

It was informed that before the surgery, the woman urgently required blood (group 'A'), but failed to find any donor. Her son, Jenikson was in a fix over procuring blood during the time of the pandemic.

It was then that the doctor stepped in and volunteered to donate his blood to ensure the patient was able to continue treatment.

"Blood donation is always a good thing and helps people who need it during emergencies. I make it a point to donate whenever I can as it could make a difference to someone's life. I would encourage more people from Garo Hills to come forward and contribute," said the doctor.

After a successful operation, Jenikson still needed help with expenses and this was when some more good Samaritans came forward to do their bit, helping him financially to tide over the situation.

For now, the patient is out of danger and feeling rather light.

"At such times, we can only thank everyone who helped us. Without their support and that of the doctor, my mother would be struggling for life. They are God sent and no amount of gratitude can repay what the doctor and those good Samaritans have done for us. I can only pray that they are blessed more than they have blessed my family," said a very grateful Jenikson.

"It just makes you feel good when people go out of their way to help those in need. The doctor is an example for all mankind and something we should all aspire to be," said one Nandey A Sangma, who is known to the patient.
