Meghalaya: Truck driver from Assam found dead in West Jaintia Hills

Following the death, West Jaintia Hills police have arrested one person and an enquiry is on to ascertain more details on the driver’s death.

A truck driver from Assam, Alok Das, was found dead at about 2.30 am on Monday in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district, Jowai police informed.

According to sources, a rice-laden truck bearing registration No. TR 01 AG 1689, belonging to Food Corporation of India (FCI) Anup Trade, parked near FCI, Ummulong, was hijacked along with the driver by unknown miscreants.

After getting information, police personnel from Jowai Police Station rushed to Jowai bypass, and information was also passed on to the weighbridge workers at Khliehtyrsi to detain the said truck.

Subsequently, the truck along and its two occupants were detained, but one of them managed to escape, police said. On further enquiry about the missing driver, the police team found trails on the road at Riaturiem, and on following them, they found the dead body in a gorge, police added.

Police also informed that the arrested person is a habitual offender.
