SHILLONG:

A Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising of traditional heads from the Khatarshnong Laitkroh and Pynursla Blocks, petitioned the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, to create a new district - South East Khasi Hills with its headquarters at Mawjrong.

In a letter to the CM, the JAC justified their demands stating that it would be prudent if the administration was brought closer to the people, considering the population and its relative distance from the capital city, Shillong.

"This would guarantee a better and more effective delivery of governmental services to the people and at the same time, ease the administrative work of the East Khasi Hills District," the letter read.

Earlier, the traditional heads of the two blocks had held a meeting on July 21, 2021, at the Dorbar Hall Elaka Laitlyngkot Comunity Hall, where it was deliberated that there is a need to create a new district. It was observed that with a population of approximately 10.50 lakh, the East Khasi Hills district, is the most populous district in the state and the creation of a new district will be beneficial for the people of Khatarshnong Laitkroh and Pynursla Blocks.

The JAC also said this district will include Pynursla C & RD Block and Khatarshnong Laitkroh C & RD block. "The land for the proposed district headquarters will be made available by Elaka Laitkroh and Elaka Laitlyngkot," said the traditional heads.

Demand for inclusion of Mawphanlur under Mairang district

Meanwhile, the Dorbar Shnong Mawphanlur village has written to the Speaker and local MLA of Mairang constituency, Metbah Lyngdoh to include Mawphanlur village in the new district of Mairang.

The dorbar shnong wanted the inclusion citing reasons that Mawphanlur village falls under the jurisdiction of Mawthadraishan Community and Rural Development Block with a distance of only 7 km and the Mawphanlur Upper Primary School too falls under the Sub-Divisional School Education Office (SDSEO) Mairang.

Notably, Mawthadraishan will be included in the Mairang district as well.
