SHILLONG:

Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar has expressed the importance of widening and strengthening the narrow road from Mawphlang to Mawkyrwat to the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

“The CM was convinced that the road needs to be improved and gave a commitment that the road will be constructed during the working season. We don’t know where we will get the funding from. It can be the World Bank, IBF, or CRF or any other fund,” Tongkhar said.

The improvement of the 50 km road would approximately be Rs 70 crore.

Turning to the tourism package of Rs 350 crore, he said, “I am worried that if the road is not improved, the package would be wasted.”

Tongkhar also spoke about developing a rock garden which is about 3 to 4 acres and the village heads are trying to seek funds to develop it.

“As a symbol to award the cooperation of three VECs- Jashiar, Nongbah Marshillong, Marshillong that has constructed a footbridge, the CM has assured to release a scheme for afforestation, and also to release funds for the rock garden,” he said.

Tongkhar said the approximate cost for developing the rock garden is estimated to be Rs 50 lakhs.
