SHILLONG:

The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of East Khasi Hills (EKH) recently apprehended three sex workers, along with three clients, from Barik-Dhankheti road in Shillong around 11 pm.

According to a release issued by the EKH Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, on Wednesday, a raid was conducted by the AHTU on July 2 around 11 pm following complaints of sex workers operating in the said road where people were seen coming in vehicles as clients.

“In this connection, a case has been registered, vide Laitumkhrah P.S Case No. 99 (07)2021 U/S 7(l)(b) Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act, and legal action (is) taken up,” Nongtnger said.

He further informed that to prevent this sort of activity in the area, apart from booking sex workers, the clients apprehended from the area will also face legal action under the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act and the Meghalaya Police Act.

Repeated complaints of such activities being carried out in the Barik-Dhankheti road have got the residents talking even as they expressed concern over the likelihood of this stretch gradually turning into Khyndai Lad, a major commercial hub in Shillong.

It may be reminded that during the Budget Session in March this year, North Shillong legislator Adelbert Nongrum had questioned the Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, whether the state government was aware that Khyndai Lad has become a “pick-up point" of sex workers in Shillong, to which the latter replied in the negative.
