Meghalaya Teachers’ Association demands December salary, pending arrears

The All Garo Hills Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan School Teachers’ Association (AGHSSASTA), through a press release on Thursday, sought the release of their December salary and the payment of their eight months’ arrears.

“We are facing a huge financial burden because of the upcoming admissions of our children in schools. Our arrears after the (PAB of 16-17) from August '16 to March '17 have been pending since years. The government has failed to address the issue, and we demand that these dues are released immediately,” said the teachers.

The teachers said they had submitted letters concerning the matter to the state government to look into the matter.

They also said they were informed that their dues would be cleared once the Centre released the funds.

According to the teachers, this explanation held little water.

“We cannot believe the assurance given by the state government that we would be given our pending arrears only if the Central Government releases the funds. How is it true that our arrears are still pending? How is the central government still keeping our arrears pending since 2016-17?” asked AGHSSASTA president Labingstone Momin.

Momin also questioned why the Centre and the state government had not sorted out the matter till now.

Meanwhile, the teachers demanded proof that the state was being truthful and that the Centre is yet to clear the arrears.

“We demand that the state government release the pending arrears immediate effect failing which we will start democratic agitations,” general secretary B Ch Marak said.

The teachers also resolved to boycott regular classes and the annual examination scheduled for March if the government failed to release their salaries and pending arrears.
