Meghalaya: Sur ki Nong Mawlai to organise sit-in demonstration on September 20

Members of the Sur ki Nong Mawlai, further led by members of Khasi Students Union; Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People; and Hynñiewtrep National Youth – Mawlai circle, have issued a statement in this regard, appealing to the residents of Mawlai in particular and Shillong as a whole to support the demonstration.

Perturbed over the delay in suspending the police officers involved in the slaying of surrendered Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, the Sur ki Nong Mawlai will organise a sit-in demonstration on September 20 from 11.00 a.m. onwards at Additional Secretariat.

Members of the Sur ki Nong Mawlai, further led by members of Khasi Students Union; Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People; and Hynñiewtrep National Youth – Mawlai circle, have issued a statement in this regard, appealing to the residents of Mawlai in particular and Shillong as a whole to support the demonstration.

It may be mentioned that various groups have demanded the suspension of three police officers in the alleged encounter killing of Thangkhiew that took place in no-knock raid at his home in Mawlai: Director General of Police R. Chandranathan, Superintendent of Police of East Jaiñtia Hills Jagpal Singh, and East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Shailendra Bamaniya.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, in his various interactions with the media, has requested the agitators to be patient and wait till the judicial enquiry is complete, informing that action can be initiated only after the investigation.
