SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya SSA teachers on Monday urged the state government to conduct the Special Teacher Eligibility Test for elementary school teachers appointed and working under SSA after NCTE Notification of 2010.

In a letter issued to the Meghalaya Education Department, the SSA teachers stated that since 2012 till date, the Government of Meghalaya has not conducted the Teacher Eligibility Test for in-service teachers appointed after NCTE Notification, 23rd August 2010 as specified in the Notification issued by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in 2012.

A notification to this regard was issued on April 22, 2021 and, it became applicable to all existing in-service SSA Teachers appointed after NCTE Notification dated August 23, 2010.

"Accordingly, an advertisement was issued by the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT), Meghalaya, Shillong on the August 27, 2021 in connection with the said notification," the letter read.

It also mentioned that SSA teachers appointed after the Notification of 2010 had served over 10 years for imparting education to the children of Meghalaya as per provisions mandated by RTE Act, 2009 and State RTE Rules, 2011.

Citing the example of Assam, wherein the Assam Government had taken a decision for conducting Special Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for in-service contractual teachers engaged under SSA, Assam, the SSA teachers of Meghalaya feel that chances should be given to all existing in-service SSA teachers by the state government.

"A ‘Special Teacher Eligibility Test' (TET) should be conducted, as done for D.El.programmme and Class XII Improvement Examination for acquiring minimum qualifications as laid down by NCTE," they observed.
