SHILLONG:

Following the protest of the people of Kharang village under Mawkynrew District for the setting of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), the Sordar of Kharang, L. Nongpluh has urged the residents to not play politics out of the important issue of education.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Nongpluh said that the village (Dorbar Shnong) held three meetings to decide on giving away land to the government for constructing the school.

“The Dorbar Shnong held 3 meetings to decide on giving away land to the government. The Dorbar Shnong will not allow anyone to play politics over this issue,” he said.

He said that Kharang has a population of about 3000, but over 200 residents staged protests, which shows that they are being misled.

Nongpluh maintained that setting up EMRS will be beneficial for the people of the area.

It may be mentioned that hundreds of people came out to protest on Wednesday arguing that the Sordar has given away 15 acres of land to the government for the construction.

The protestors argued that they don't have anything against the project, but don’t want to give away the land as they need it for farming, housing, rearing livestock, etc.

Meanwhile, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Mawkynrew circle met the local MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh and urged him to gather all the traditional heads under Mawkynrew to create awareness on this, having extended their support for setting up the school as well.

Speaking to media persons, the president of HYC Mawkynrew circle, Batosing Lating said that the MLA has assured them that he will look into the matter

“We have requested the MLA to constitute or gather the local heads of Mawkynrew along with officers concerned to solve the issue and make necessary clarifications,” he said.

Stating that education is the need of the hour, Lating said that concerned officers should sensitise the public about the need of setting up EMRS and the importance of the school for the residents.

Advisor of HYC Mawkynrew, Harkin Warjri said, “Our place there in Mawkynrew needs major development. The residents of Kharang should not be misled by few people with vested interests.

Criticising those who instigated the protest, he said that such people should not mislead the public only to gain political yardage.

“We met the MLA to ensure that the school has to be there in Mawkynrew even if the people of Kharang do not want so,” he added.
