Meghalaya: Section 144 imposed in Tura

The West Garo Hills District Magistrate has issued an Order under Section 144 Cr PC read together with Regulation 3 of the Meghalaya Epidemic Disease, COVID-19 Regulation, 2020 to contain the spread of the virus.

The district magistrate took the decision in view of the spike in COVID-19 from returnees who are coming from different states to Tura having lockdown and exponential cases.

"Because of the highly contagious nature of the virus, it is necessary to break the transmission chain and necessary to put in place preventive measures so that it does not spread to other parts of Garo Hills," the district magistrate stated.

As per the order, all schools and other educational institutions of Tura Town including St John Secondary School, Chibragre and Auxillium Secondary School, Alotgre shall remain closed with effect from April 28, 2021 to May 8, 2021. 

However, ongoing MBOSE examinations will continue as scheduled by strictly following COVID protocols. All the institutions shall maintain the classes through online teaching.

Further, the District Magistrate had directed that all the shops and commercial establishments in the Town area to close their business activities by 7:00 pm every day with effect from April 28 but will be closed for the entire day on Sundays. 

However, home delivery services shall continue including pharmacies.

The order also stated that the Night Curfew from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am all over the district shall continue until further orders however, it would not apply to Security Forces, Medical Teams and other Emergency Services.

Violators would be imposed penalty by the designated officers, who have been empowered under Section 2 of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 as notified earlier.
