SHILLONG:

Following the encounter of former general secretary of proscribed group Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Cherishterfield Thangkhiew on Friday, local MLA of Mawlai PT Sawkmie has asked the state government to conduct a thorough investigation into the case and demanded an explanation from the Police Department.

“I demand an explanation from the police department. The state government should initiate a thorough probe into the incident,” Sawkmie said.

Meanwhile, Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) has condemned the killing of the 54-year-old by the Meghalaya Police in the wee hours of Friday. Echoing Sawkmie’s demands, TUR also stressed on initiation of an independent probe headed by a High Court judge into the incident.

“TUR does not accept killings or any kind of violence, whether by the state or non-state actors. Killings and violence destroy the fabric of day-to-day life and create an atmosphere of fear for all," TUR stated.

TUR further stated that the law should be equal for all, and all citizens are required to follow it but this holds even more to the state and its government.
