SHILLONG:

The Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG), the Delhi-based independent think-tank that conducts risks analysis to prevent violations of human rights, has called for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the encounter of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.

“Only a CBI investigation can find out the truth in the incident,” said Suhas Chakma, Director of the RRAG.

According to RRAG, as per the NHRC data, between 2014-2015 to 2018-2019 Meghalaya ranked 7th in the country on police encounter deaths when 1,073 persons were killed. Chakma also stated that the high encounter rate during the period is a matter of great concern in Meghalaya given the population of the state, which stands at 30 lakhs according to the 2011 census.
