SHILLONG:

The precarious condition of the retaining wall along the Sohiong by-pass, which is yet to be repaired since last year, has not only become an eye-sore but also poses a danger for commuters.

"The retaining wall along the Sohiong By-pass is yet to be restored and, the precarious wall poses a danger to people who commute along the highway," Sohiong MLA Samlin Malngiang told The Northeast Today (TNT).

Malngiang informed that he would be holding a meeting with PWD Minister Prestone Tynsong to discuss the situation.

“We have requested the PWD Minister to repair the retaining wall at the earliest to ensure that commuters along the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura National Highway are not in danger,” the local MLA said.

The road is one of the major highways in the state and connects around 30 constituencies and, frequented by different legislators day in and out.

Giving details about the repair cost, Malngiang stated that the estimates for the work would be prepared by the office of National Highway (PWD) Meghalaya.

It may be mentioned that the wall along the National Highway had collapsed in September 2020 and has not been repaired since then.

Social activist Agnes Kharshiing had filed an FIR on the same issue highlighting the sub-standard quality of the work and the threat it poses to the commuters.
