Meghalaya: Residents seek proper water supply in North Garo Hills

Residents of Nishangram, close to the border with Assam in North Garo Hills (NGH) have complained to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma as well as the Deputy Commissioner of the district after facing a severe water crisis that has continued for a long time.

Dreambest Marak, secretary of the Village Water Sanitation Committee (VWYC), who submitted the complaint on November 3, said, “We have very few sources of water through streams or big springs despite being hilly. Some houses are using little water from the minor sources for potable drinking water and other household chores, but it is not enough for them.”

Marak said that the situation was such that people had to stand in a queue to take bath or for drinking.

“We have to wait for droplets to fill up the pitcher, and the situation gets worse during the dry season. In some parts, a single well is being used by a group of households, and there are no proper places to dig wells. Some households are even walking half a kilometre to get potable drinking water,” added Marak.

Marak also said that the situation was pathetic, and it was not only for drinking water that there was a clamour but for other domestic purposes.
