“Our demand for suspension of police officials stands as it is. The judicial enquiry committee needs to expedite its investigation into the case to ensure safety and security of our youth,” said Samuel Biam, president of Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun.

SHILLONG:

Members of the Voice of Mawlai People, a conglomeration of several NGOs in the town, burnt effigies of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, two other cabinet ministers, and police officials at Mawlai Petrol Pump on Wednesday evening.

The other effigies burnt were of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Director General of Police R Chandranathan, Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills Jagpal Singh, and East Khasi Hills SP (Traffic), Shailendra Bamaniya.

The demonstration took place following a public meeting that was held at the site in protest against the "failure" of the state government to meet the seven-day deadline issued by the conglomeration to suspend the top police officials involved in the supposed encounter of ex-militant Cherish S Thangkhiew at Mawlai Kynton Massar on August 13.

“Our demand for suspension of police officials stands as it is. The judicial enquiry committee needs to expedite its investigation into the case to ensure safety and security of our youth,” said Samuel Biam, president of Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun.

The Rangbah Shnong (headman) of Mawlai Phudmuri, Sylvester Kurbah questioned the silence of the other headmen of Mawlai town in the matter and reminded them of the resolution taken on August 17, demanding justice for late Cherish S Thangkhiew.

The public meeting resolved to hold a signature campaign and candlelight vigil on August 27 from Mawlai Stand Bus till Mawlai Petrol Pump. “To the Conrad-Prestone government, be prepared - you will see many agitations in the days to come,” said Donboklang Kharlyngdoh, HYC Mawlai circle president.

Last week, during a meeting with the representatives of Mawlai, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had stated that no stress was emphasised on the seven-day deadline by the conglomeration and had maintained that whatever the case may be, they will amicably resolve all those issues.

Earlier, the Voice of Mawlai people had demanded the immediate suspension of two top cops from East Jaintia Hills and East Khasi Hills, who they believed, were involved in the killing of Cherishsterfield.
