SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said that a proper investigation should be conducted on the charges of rape against NPP MLA Thomas A. Sangma, and hinted that conclusions must not be arrived at prematurely till the police complete the investigation.

“The government is to ensure that the law will be applicable to all,” Conrad said, adding that the government will initiate necessary steps based on the investigation report. He also stated that it is not appropriate for the government to comment on someone’s personal matter without ascertaining the facts and without the required information.

“The only thing that the government can assure is that the law will take its own course and ensure that there will be proper investigation that will take place,” he said, further adding that before the completion of investigation, the government should be unbiased towards both the persons concerned in the case.

On Wednesday, NPP state chief W.R. Kharlukhi and Congress Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma also expressed their support for a fair probe, stating that allegations cannot be the basis for commenting on the case.

However, differing from Mukul’s stance, Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh had petitioned the Assembly Speaker to remove Thomas from House Committees.

Reacting to this, Conrad said, “It would not be fair at this point in time to jump to conclusion without the investigation being done. Let the investigation be done and then accordingly, necessary steps and action can be taken.”
