SHILLONG:

Minister in-charge of Power James K. Sangma said on Monday that the government has no intention to move ahead with the Umngot Hydro Electric Project and a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which was earlier signed, has been scrapped.

James said that the state is currently dealing with power issues and the need to ramp up the generating capacity could have been the reason why people misread the Umngot scenario. However, there were no plans to move ahead with it presently.

He added that if there was any decision otherwise, then the concerned stakeholders will be consulted and any concerns would likewise be addressed.

Speaking on the alternatives to ramp up capacity, James said that the government is exploring other opportunities like wind, solar, and other hydro projects.

Earlier this year, an Executive Committee meeting of the Joint Action Committee against Umngot Hydro Electric Project had met different ministers, including the Power Minister, to scrap the Umngot Hydro Electric Project

Recently, the government had also assured a group of entrepreneurs and village heads under Ki Kynhun Ki Nongrep Harud Wah Umngot (KKNHWU) that any fears or concerns related to the project will be taken up for discussion with the cabinet.
