SHILLONG:

The Meghalaya Police has registered a criminal case against the United Bangal Liberation Army (UBLA) for criminal conspiracy, for a threat to wage conflict against the local populace of Meghalaya, and for criminal intimidation against Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

According to the press communique issued by Assistant Inspector General of Police GK Iangrai on Saturday, the criminal case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Meghalaya, and investigation of the case is ensuing.

"Meghalaya Police once again appeals to all the concerned citizens to kindly refrain from inciting a breach of communal peace and harmony, and if any person is found to be contravening the statutory provisions of law, stringent action will be taken against them," Iangrai said.

The UBLA, a Bengali-based militant group of Tripura, had dropped two letters -- dated October 19, at the office of the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) in Jaiaw, Shillong on Saturday morning.

According to the letter, the UBLA said, "this is not a negotiation or dialogue letter but an ultimatum to you (KSU) and to whomsoever dares to touch the sentiments of the Bangali people."

While threatening to send the 1.4 million Khasi people back to their place of origin in Combodia in a flash, the UBLA claimed that their 'Banga Senas' are ready to plot for an unimaginable situation in Meghalaya.

Furthermore, they also threatened to include Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in the "list", if provoked, for his statement on Gorkhaland.

The proscribed group has also opposed the Assam Accord, National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, and any attempt to "provide NSCN-IM and Nagaland their own flag and freedom".
