SHILLONG:

The education sector is countering challenges posed by COVID-19 to bring back discipline in the lives of students who are getting used to smartphones, dubbed a necessity for online classes.

Raising concern over the online mode of education, the vice-principal of Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Jona Goswami said, “That normal class atmosphere is just not there unless we can bring back students to school. We talk of economic crisis, but I believe that academics is worst hit.”

She further informed that conducting online classes during the pandemic is a big problem as several factors need to be considered, the first being proper network and tools, secondly discipline cannot be maintained during offline classes.

She pointed out that communication becomes difficult without eye-to-eye contact with students.

Goswami said that children are given smartphones for online classes, but expressed concern as to how the students are using them, and if they are being monitored.

“We have given them a tool and if they do not have mental maturity, it can be dangerous. Some students will make use of it but most of them will not,” she added.

Stating that some of the students were loitering around, she lamented bringing them back to the same old system will take a lot of time.
