SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) R. Chandranathan on Friday informed that more people are likely to be arrested in connection with the recent IED blast cases in the state. He said that the police are well aware of the entire matrix of how the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) operates and they are ready to mitigate any threat.

“Our investigation is on full swing. But when somebody makes a bomb and tries to place it in public places then it is not the responsibility of the police alone, but the community and everybody,” he said.

Speaking about the rise in militant activities of HNLC in the state, the DGP said that there are 16 members of the outfit in Bangladesh and the police have identified about 30 overground workers. “Our investigation shows that the militant outfits are employing delinquent elements and it is not only the cadres who are doing it all,” he said.

Commenting on the Khliehriat IED blast in July, he said that they have arrested some people in connection to the blast and one of them, Ranjeet Kumar, a drug addict, is the person who had lit the fuse.

Echoing the state government’s stand on the HNLC’s offer for peace talks, the DGP said, “The government’s position was very clear from the beginning that the HNLC eschew violence and then come for talks.” He also added that the police are aware of the militant outfit’s threat to Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and are well prepared.
