SHILLONG:

Meghalaya cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai met Union Minister of State for Defence, Ajay Bhatt on Friday to apprise him about a slew of issues including the lease holders’ problems of the Shillong Cantonment area due to the rise in calculated Standard Table of Rents (STR), implementation of building by-laws, and relocation of Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) gate, among others.

In a memorandum submitted to Bhatt, Shullai requested the Defence Ministry to implement only 0.25 of the STR, which will help reduce the cost for the lessees in the Cantonment area.

The BJP minister also discussed the early implementation of the building bye-laws and sought funds for the water tank at Jhalupara, the up-gradation of Goenka Hospital, and Shillong Cantonment School, proposals of which have been sent by the Shillong Cantonment Board.

Shullai also urged Bhatt to help provide No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for various roads in Shillong, which would ease traffic congestions in the city. He also apprised the Union Minister about the difficulties faced by the residents of Mawshbuit locality in Shillong, whose only point of entry and exit lies within the defence area.

Shullai requested Bhatt to relocate the Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) gate and allot a free and unhindered passage for civilian movement.
