SHILLONG:

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought economic hardship to many families, making it difficult for them to meet the costs of education. Across the country, the higher pass percentage in the various higher secondary board examinations has led to an increased demand for undergraduate seats this year.

Keeping this in mind, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) has announced free undergraduate (UG) education for 100 students belonging to economically backward families.

Dr Iwanmon WJ Laloo, the Registrar of MLCU, said that looking back at the experience of the admission last year and also because many students whose parents are daily wage earners, the dropout rate or the number of students not joining the UG course is huge.

"So what we felt is that since we have the facility, we could give free COVID scholarships," Laloo said.

These students will be provided with a full scholarship for the three to four years of the bachelor’s degree for the academic year 2021-22. Only a nominal application fee of Rs 100 will be levied.

"We have not extended our support to other states as yet, but in future, if possible, we will try and go beyond the state," she added.

We will also be going to institutions, religious organisations, and get direct nominations from them so that only the genuine cases receive the benefit," she said.

The 100 seats will be in the following departments: Business Administration (BBA), Computer Applications (BCA), Environment and Traditional Ecosystems (BSc), Music (BA), Food Science and Nutrition (BSc) and Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM).

Preference for admission will be given to students whose parents lost their job or livelihood recently because of the COVID-19 pandemic, single mothers, orphans, transgender or disabled children in poor circumstances.

The window for applications is from August 28-September 13, 2021. The details are available on the university website or one may also contact the admissions helpline number: 9362703349/9863594249 for further information.
