Kannanthanam was reacting to a query on the issue of land for former bureaucrats at Re. 1 per sq in new Shillong township.

"Don't thing that people in power should use it to benefit themselves," the Union Minister of State for Tourism and election in-charge Meghalaya told media persons today at the Assam House.

"It not right that the people should exercise their powers to get benefit for themselves. Every bureaucrats and politicians should realize that their job is to do things for the overall benefit of the citizens," Kannanthanam added.

He pointed out that if those in power are going to corner all the wealth and amass all the privileges for themselves, it tantamount to committing a criminal offence.

It may be mentioned that the CAG report for the year ending March 31, 2011 had pointed out that, "Unauthorized allotment of land to the Civil Service Officers Housing Cooperative Society Limited and incorrect fixation of premium at a lower rate, resulted in undue financial benefit of Rs 78.42 lakh to the society, besides allotment of land in excess of the prescribed limit" thereby drawing a lot of flak from numerous quarters including civil society.
