SHILLONG:

The Jaiñtia Students Union (JSU) have questioned the legislators of Jaintia Hills for neglecting the Jowai–Shillong NH 44 and Amlarem–Dawki NH 44E roads.

“The JSU seeks answers from all the 7 MLAs of Jaiñtia Hills who frequently commute through these roads to Shillong. The condition of the highways has led to hardships for the people, and what have they done to mend them?" asked the union over a statement.

The union also informed that they have apprised the Executive Engineer of Jowai Central Division on the issue. Given the lack of repair works, the JSU questioned the role of the Public Works Department of the said division on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Executive Engineer has informed the Union that the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) will be tendering repair work of the Jowai–Shillong NH44 road soon.

The Executive Engineer also said that the Corporation had in the past conducted a survey on NH 44 without the knowledge of the Public Works Department and that the Central Government does not grant funds for major road repairs, although it does for minor ones.
