Meghalaya HC tells govt to refrain from making Aadhaar Card mandatory for Covid vaccination

Urging the government to consider other equivalent ID cards for the purpose, the Bench stated, "We would request the state government not to insist on production of Aadhar card as the only proof of identity since there are other options available to citizens to verify themselves."

SHILLONG:

In a bid to augment the vaccination process in the state, the Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday directed the state government not to make Aadhar Card the only identity proof required for Covid-19 vaccination.

In this regard, a Division Bench comprising Justices Biswanath Somadder and HS Thangkhiew stated that, to some extent, the vaccination process currently adopted by the Meghalaya government acts as a hindrance to eligible beneficiaries who do not possess Aadhar Card.

Urging the government to consider other equivalent ID cards for the purpose, the Bench stated, "We would request the state government not to insist on production of Aadhar card as the only proof of identity since there are other options available to citizens to verify themselves."

The Justices maintained that in some places of Meghalaya, particularly remote villages, eligible persons are not getting vaccinated because they do not have an Aadhar Card.
