SHILLONG:

The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Ri-Bhoi Regional Unit took out a protest rally on Monday, opposing the “give and take policy” reached between Assam and Meghalaya governments.

Asserting that not "an inch of land" should be given to Assam, the GSU has demanded an immediate solution to the border issue between the two states.

The student's body raised concern over problems in the border areas and vowed not to secede land in areas like Maikulli, Pillangkata and  Ïongkuli to Assam.

Speaking to the press, the president of Garo Mahila Committee, Rinkumani Marak, urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to retain lands that have already been encroached upon.

Advisor of GSU, RB Sunmoon Marak, meanwhile, said that they were not informed about the inspection conducted by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and some legislators on Saturday.

“We are not satisfied, because the Assam counterpart is claiming the land belonging to Meghalaya as falling under Assam. We strongly object to the claim, and we will not give an inch of land to Assam," he pointed.
