SHILLONG:

The District Labour Offices in collaboration with the Common Service Centers (CSCs) is undertaking the registration of 9.43 lakh unorganised workers, which is the target set for the state of Meghalaya even as the low Aadhar enrollment amongst the unorganised workers is a challenge for the department.

Informing the Northeast Today (TNT) that having an Aadhar number is necessary for the enrollment, Principal Secretary of Labour Department, GHP Raju said, “The problem in the state of Meghalaya is that some of the unorganised workers do not have the Aadhar number.”

He said that a meeting was held in this connection with the NGOs, and respective headmen to help the unorganised workers such as taxi drivers, shopkeepers, and others on the importance of Aadhar enrollment for availing different benefits.

It may be recalled that the Supreme Court order dated June 29, 2021, pointed out that the process of registration of unorganised labourers/migrant workers is to be completed by the state/Union Territories governments at the earliest but not later than December 31, 2021.

The cumulative total of unorganised workers on e-SHRAM portal as on December 6, 2021, is 61,191.

The registration status of unorganised sector workers as on December 6 in diferent districts are: West Garo Hills - 22921, South West Garo Hills - 14040, East Jaintia Hills - 4362, West Jaintia Hills - 4184, East Khasi Hills - 3979, East Garo Hills - 3576, Ri Bhoi -3314, North Garo Hills - 2415, South Garo Hills - 889, West Khasi Hills - 836, South West Khasi Hills - 675.

It may be mentioned that the Ministry of Labour & Employment has a national database for unorganised workers (NDUW), and the registration of unorganised workers will be facilitated on the e-SHRAM (NDUW) portal.

It is learnt that the unorganised workers will get the benefits of social security & welfare schemes. Besides, the database will help the government in framing policy and programs for unorganised workers.

The enrollment will also help the governement to keep track of the migrant labour workforce, and thier movement from informal sector to formal sector for better employmentyt opportunities.
