Meghalaya govt plans to construct parking facility at Phan Nonglait park in Shillong

Meghalaya Forest Minister James PK Sangma on Thursday visited 'Ka Phan Nonglait' Park (formerly known as Lady Hydari Park) in Shillong to oversee the government's plan to construct a parking facility to decongest traffic in the city.

"The plan is underway to construct a befitting parking facility without disrupting the park’s aesthetics. This should help traffic decongestion in the area and will be a revenue-generating model for the Department concerned and the State as a whole," Sangma said.

Sangma was accompanied by Principal Chief Conservator of Forest BK Lyngwa, Secretary to the Department of Forest & Environment Manjunatha C. and Chief Wildlife Warden HC Chaudhary.

"We had a great conversation on how to turn the park into a more breathable environment, solely for recreation and leisure," Sangma wrote on Facebook.

The park has long served as a patch of beauty, connecting children with nature and offering them green wide open spaces.

The officials also talked about the wellbeing of the animals by offering them a better habitat.

"On that note, the Department is working towards relocating all existing animal and bird species to the State Zoo at Umtrew (in Ri Bhoi district), Meghalaya," Sangma added.
