SHILLONG:

Meghalaya Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla expressed optimism about meeting expenses required to tackle COVID-19 through the revenue collected from the excise duty on liquor.

“In case we face any hardship, the revenue collected from the department can make (the) necessary contributions (to) enable the state to (meet the expenses)," Shylla said.

The government wants to strike a balance to enable the government to generate revenue, he said.

“Revenue generation from other departments is very less while the Excise department generates a fair share of revenue to the state’s exchequer. We have to strike a balance because there will be limited revenue if we close all shops," Shylla added.

It may be mentioned that the excise duty on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) is one of the sources of revenue for the state of Meghalaya.
