SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said that the government is making efforts to improve the overall health infrastructure in the state, given the current COVID situation.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Sangma said, “Different efforts are being made to raise the overall infrastructure. A lot of work has happened at the regional headquarters including Tura and Shillong. Overall efforts to improve the health infrastructure to a large extent has been made in the last 12 months and even recently."

The CM added that the government is revamping the overall infrastructure in the capital and district headquarter level.

“We are revamping the overall infrastructure at the capital and district headquarter level, but if numbers go out of control then it is difficult to give proper services”, he said.

Speaking about the alarming situation in the country, he said that there is an unprecedented rise in the number of COVID cases, and it is important to follow all the guidelines laid by the government.

“It is important to take decisions at the right time and that is the reason why we are going to put heavy restrictions as we are seeing a trend that could be disturbing," Sangma said.

Shedding light on the possibility of lockdown, he said, “Total lockdown will be the measure to stop everything, but that would also stop the livelihood of the people. Learning from the experience we had last time, the balance has to be struck between livelihood economics and the safety of the people.”

It may be mentioned that the Supreme Court has urged the centre and states to consider imposing a lockdown to break the chain in the interest of public welfare.

He said, prevention is the best way to handle the situation by following protocols and complete lockdown will lead to a large economic burden on the poor, especially farmers and labourers.

He added that it is important to decentralise the decision making and micro-manage things.

“It is not a simple decision to make. So as of now, we have gone for very strict containment zones in different areas and we are once again urging the people to avoid large gatherings, avoid social programmes and continue following protocols,” he added.
