TURA:

The sub-post office at Dakopgre in Tura, West Garo Hills, was gutted in a fire reportedly due to an electrical short circuit on April 12 morning around 2 am.

Most of the equipment in the office have been reduced to ashes.

With the timely intervention of the fire department, the fire was prevented from spreading elsewhere.

The area, as per reports, has been cordoned off to investigate the source of the fire since the incident coincidently took place on a day that various NGOs had called for a boycott of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.

“The matter is currently under investigation though prima facie there seems to be no foul play involved. We have questioned a few people relating to the matter and, further details are awaited,” said the superintendent of police, Dr MGR Kumar.

A team from the fire department as well as the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has been on the scene to determine the cause, with both blaming a short circuit.

Meanwhile, a source from the post office said that a machine that was supposed to have been switched off might have been left on, causing overloading of the system, subsequently leading to the fire.
