SHILLONG:

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has given people advice on coping with the lockdown and excessive consumerism – eat vegetables with rice instead of meat with rice.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he was asked on whether the government is providing any help to the poor people.

“Life is more important than anything else, so please bear with us so instead of having meat everyday take vegetables with rice. Because right now, we have to be sure that we should survive, we need to survive,” he said.

He said that prior to the lockdown the MGNREGS or construction works in the respective premises were allowed.

“What else is to be done by the government? It is not so simple that the government should bail out everything. You need to understand the ground reality. If we talk about life, I think that is more precious than anything else. When we impose total lockdown, we have seen this problem. But this problem cannot be just taken by the government, we have problem, even the rich people have problem not only poor people,” Tynsong said.

Asked, he said that work has been entrusted to the Deputy Commissioners and district surveillance team regarding essential commodities.

The dorbar shnong or anybody who has shortage of commodities, the District administration will monitor with the respective dorbar shnong.

“System is in place where we authorised the dorbar shnong and contact the dedicated team and will issue passes to local traders in the respective villages,” he said.

With over 1000 cases and the cases keep increasing day by day, he said, “The trend is dangerous but people should not be panicky and if we follow the protocols strictly issued by the health department, that itself will help us a lot.”
