Meghalaya: Contractual teachers call off hunger strike over permission issues

 |

TURA:

Meghalaya contractual teachers from Garo Hills, who had been camped in William Point near Hawakhana on March 16, today called off their strike owing the District administration not extending their permission to agitate because of the model code of conduct (MCC) in place for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election.

The teachers, earlier on Monday (Mar 15) tried to begin their indefinite hunger strike at the Tura MP Stadium (now PA Sangma Stadium) under the banner of the All Garo Hills Government LP and UP School Contractual Teachers Association (AGHLPUPSCTA).

They could not do so because of problems with permission from the District administration.

The teachers have been protesting over the fear that they would be left with no livelihood options if they are axed from their services and demanded that they be allowed to continue in their professions and given multiple chances to clear the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test.
