SHILLONG:

Congress MLA from Mawlai P.T. Sawkmie has blamed the central government for the rise in petrol and diesel prices, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remained indifferent on the issue of soaring fuel prices.

“The Meghalaya Chief Minister should meet the Prime Minister. In fact, Chief Ministers from the Northeast together must call upon the PM to highlight the problems faced by people due to the rise in fuel prices," Sawkmie told the press on Monday.

Sawkmie further said that the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition of political parties in the Northeast region, must take a step to appraise the centre on the same.

The MLA also mentioned that the Prime Minister has spoken on a lot of things in his famous talk show Mann Ki Baat but never addressed the issue of rising prices of everyday items on the platform.

“The people are surprised that the PM did not speak about the issue. It is not just petrol and diesel prices, but even the price of gas cylinders has increased. Why is the PM not talking about this in his Mann Ki Baat? Also, why is the MDA government silent on this matter?” he said.

He observed that the hike in petrol and diesel prices are having a cascading effect on the cost of essential commodities and it’s the common people who are facing the brunt.

The price of petrol and diesel touched Rs 100-mark on October 15, and is showing an upward increase since then across the country.
